Matic Network at Devcon5 Osaka: Full Recap

3 min read

Fresh from our recent activities at Korea Blockchain Week, the Matic team wasted no time in heading to this year’s Devcon conference, the annual gathering held by the Ethereum Foundation. This year Devcon was held in the beautiful city of Osaka, Japan from October 8th to October 11th, 2019 with a wide array of prominent blockchain projects and companies in attendance. Representatives from leading educational institutions and tech titans such as Samsung were also present.

The Matic team took part in many events during the three-day period, networking with the attendees and providing our thoughts and insights on how layer 2 scaling solutions, decentralized finance (DeFi), and blockchain gaming are key elements in moving the space forward towards our mutual goal of mass adoption of blockchain technology.

Here’s a full recap of our time at Devcon, Ethereum’s largest annual gathering!

Matic CEO Jaynti Kanani’s speech on scaling Ethereum

We were honoured that our CEO, Jaynti Kanani, was invited to speak at Devcon on October 9th. Jaynti delivered a speech to the attendees on the Devcon main stage on the topic of ‘Scaling Ethereum with Security and Usability In Mind’, discussing the fundamental priorities of the current blockchain space and how we can achieve our short, medium and long-term goals on the road to achieving mass adoption.

Delivering a workshop alongside Zk pioneer Barry Whitehat

Following on from Jaynti’s speech, the next day on October 10th it was Matic Blockchain Engineer Vaibhav Chellani’s time to shine in the Devcon spotlight; Vaibhav was also invited to Devcon5 to deliver a workshop on ‘Scaling your favourite DApp with ZkRollup’ alongside Zk pioneer Barry Whitehat.

The two researchers discussed how ZkRollup could represent the future of off-chain scaling and demonstrated the benefits of BUIDLing with ZkRollup through a practical workshop for the Devcon audience.

Networking with Devcon attendees at the OFFDevcon Rooftop Drinks Meetup

On October 8th, we co-hosted an evening of drinks and fun alongside Circle and Reserve directly after the first day of the conference, to kick off the Devcon5 evening program!

Our COO & Co-founder Sandeep Nailwal was there engaging in conversation and networking with the Devcon attendees. It was a blast, to say the least!

Spreading Knowledge at Node.Osaka

Node.Osaka, which was centred around the topic of ‘Crypto in Asia, Things You Should But Probably Didn’t Know About’, was held on October 9th. The event was a community-focused meetup which provided attendees with the opportunity to learn about the decentralized movement in the East and the chance to communicate with leading blockchain projects from all across Asia.

We joined representatives from Band, Celer, Kyber, Nervos and Pundi X for a series of talks, a panel discussion and an AMA session to connect with the attendees.

Sharing DeFi knowledge at the DeFi Drinks event

On the evening of October 9th, we also attended DeFi Drinks, a casual meetup offering the opportunity for attendees of all types who are interested in decentralized finance to network with the movers and shakers of the DeFi space. Other prominent DeFi-focused projects including 0xBand Protocol, AAVE, bZxDeversiFi and Alice were also in attendance.

Layer 2 Meetup: Osaka Edition

On October 10th, thought leaders of Layer 2 solutions gathered at the Layer 2 Meetup organized by GEO Protocol to discuss the current and future development of second layer solutions.

Our Co-founder & CPO, Anurag Arjun delivered a speech on the topic of ‘UX and DX in Layer 2 solutions’. It was an incredible day of lightning talks, panel discussions, and networking!

Co-hosting the Binance X Dev Meetup

The Binance X Dev Meetup, also held on October 10th, was organised by Binance, Matic, Torus, CertiK, Decore, NYM and Republic. The question in the spotlight was ‘What’s next for the blockchain ecosystem?’. Industry leaders, including our COO Sandeep Nailwal, and recognised blockchain developers provided their insights in a series of lightning talks and a panel discussion.

Rounding off with the User X Devcon After-party

We co-hosted an afterparty for Devcon5 attendees on October 11th alongside other prominent user experience & scalability focused projects including Torus Labs, Portis, Authereum and Off-chain Labs.

Representatives from the projects spoke at the event, including Matic’s COO & Co-founder, Sandeep Nailwal! It was an incredible night of great conversations, networking, learning, and drinks on us at the iconic landmark of Taiko-En in Osaka – the perfect way to round off Devcon5!

Closing thoughts

Devcon has always been a primary source of inspiration, energy and creativity for those working towards building the decentralized future, and this year it’s safe to say that this has never been truer. It was an honor to be invited to deliver multiple speeches at the main event and was a pleasure to host and attend such a wide array of sub-events and meetups.

Needless to say, the Matic Network team left Devcon5 with a renewed sense of purpose after witnessing all of the efforts devoted towards nurturing the global developer ecosystem for Ethereum.

Here’s to our bright decentralized future! Ethereum community, let’s keep #BUIDLing!
